Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
Salt Lake City & Moab, UT

Are you bothered by saggy or deflated breasts? Do you wish you could turn back the hands of time and restore what were once perky and young breasts? Mastopexy, or breast lift, does just that: it elevates the sagging breast and nipple, making them look more youthful.

Top breast lift surgeon Dr. Leland Chick performs the procedure using a general anesthetic at one of his fully accredited surgical centers. The procedure alone takes about 2 ½ hours but can be done with the addition of breast augmentation surgery if more volume is desired. Recovery time depends on patients’ normal daily activities, but most women can return to work in seven to 10 days and to full activity in three to four weeks.

Breast Lift Candidacy

Ideal candidates for breast lift are women who:

  • Have saggy or deflated breasts due to pregnancies, nursing, weight fluctuations, aging or genetics
  • Have breasts and nipples that sit below the natural breast crease line
  • Have overly large or stretched out areolas
  • Have nipples that point downward
  • Desire a better breast shape and position

In addition, candidates should be in good physical health and have reasonable expectations of surgery and the potential results. Dr. Chick meets with each patient individually to evaluate her full medical history and determine whether or not she is an appropriate candidate for breast lift. He also discusses all aspects of the procedure, including possible complications, risks and what to expect before and after surgery.

Procedure Details

Length of Operation: 1.5 to 3 hours

Anesthesia: General anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation

Length of Hospital or Facility Stay: Outpatient procedure

Risks: Bleeding, infection, poor wound healing, temporary or permanent changes in nipple sensation

Breast lift is a highly individualized procedure and will be tailored to your unique needs and goals. During the procedure, incisions will be made in the natural breast fold and around the areola. The breast tissue will then be reshaped and repositioned higher on the chest wall. Excess skin will be removed and the remaining skin will be redraped over the breast mound. Once Dr. Chick is done making all of the agreed-upon modifications, he will close the incisions with sutures. Surgical dressings and a compression bra will be placed to protect and support the tissues as they heal.

Breast lift does not affect the ability to breast feed, and usually does not interfere with nipple sensation.

Breast Lift Incision Pattern

The most common incision patterns for breast lift include:

  • Periareolar incision – a circular incision around the edge of the areola
  • Lollipop incision – an incision around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease
  • Anchor incision – an incision around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease and horizontally along the crease

Does Breast Lift Cause Scars?

The major trade-off of this procedure is scarring from the incisions required to remove excess skin and thus lift the breast.  The length of scars is dependent on the amount of skin that is removed. Smaller scars result when the incisions can be limited to around the areola and a short distance under the breast; larger scars result when the incisions required are much more extensive.

The visibility of scars is also dependent on the skill of the surgeon who performs the breast lift procedure. With Dr. Chick, you can expect your scars to heal and fade over time to the point where they are nearly invisible. Good post-op care is also important. The surgeon will provide you with a list of instructions on how to care for your healing scars.

What to Expect During Recovery

Depending on your personal healing progress and the details of your procedure, the initial recovery period can take between one and two weeks. During this time you will need to refrain from many everyday activities, including going to work, exercise, bending and lifting your arms above your head. Side effects such as bruising, swelling and soreness are normal but should subside over time. Dr. Chick may prescribe oral pain medication to minimize any discomfort you may feel.

Several follow-up appointments will be scheduled so Dr. Chick and his team can monitor your healing progress. It is important for you to keep these appointments as the surgeon may recommend making modifications to enhance your recovery. He will also advise you on when you can take off your compression bra, return to work, begin exercising and resume other everyday activities.

How Long Will Breast Lift Results Last?

The results of breast lift can last many years. Gravity, however, continues to affect the breast after the operation, and some evidence of sagging will eventually be visible again. How long it takes to show again, and how significant it becomes, is dependent on:

  1. Current breast skin elasticity
  2. Pregnancy
  3. Significant weight gain and/or loss
  4. Significant sun exposure
  5. Quality of your genes

In any event, it is unlikely that the amount of sagging that recurs will be as significant as before surgery.

Can Breast Lift Be Combined with Other Breast Procedures?

Yes, breast lift can be performed in conjunction with other breast procedures. Women who desire larger and fuller breasts may choose to combine breast lift with breast augmentation. On the other hand, some women with overly large and heavy breasts choose to improve size and position with a breast reduction and lift. Dr. Chick can recommend a treatment plan after evaluating your breasts, aesthetic needs and goals.

How Much Does Breast Lift Cost?

The cost of breast lift is approximately $6,300. That includes the surgeon’s fee, anesthesiologist’s fee and facility fee. For more precise pricing information, please request a consultation at our practice.

Other Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Lift

Can breast lift improve the appearance of asymmetrical breasts?

Breast lift may improve the appearance of asymmetrical breasts if they are approximately the same size but not in line with one another. One or both breasts may be operated on to achieve a symmetrical breast position.

How much pain should I expect from breast lift?

You should not be in significant pain from breast lift. During the surgery, you will be under sedation or general anesthesia and will not be able to feel anything or remember anything from surgery. After your surgery, you will be prescribed pain medication to take to alleviate pain or discomfort.

When can I return to work or the gym?

Most patients are able to resume work within one to two weeks of surgery. Light exercise such as walking can be resumed when you have enough energy, but you should refrain from more strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for four to six weeks after surgery.

Will I be able to breastfeed after breast lift?

Whether you are able to successfully breastfeed after breast lift depends on factors such as whether you could breastfeed before surgery, your breast anatomy and the procedure performed. Keep in mind that breastfeeding after surgery may “undo” some of the improvements of surgery. If you wish to breastfeed after surgery, discuss this possibility with Dr. Chick during your initial consultation.

Will I lose nipple sensation after breast lift?

There is the possibility of losing nipple sensation after breast lift. However, the majority of patients do not lose nipple sensation or find that any loss in sensation is only temporary. Dr. Chick can explain the factors that increase the chances of losing sensitivity during your consultation.

Will a breast lift without implants make my breasts look smaller?

Breast lift without implants may make the breasts look smaller because perkier breasts take up less surface area on the chest than saggy breasts. However, little (if any) breast tissue is removed during the procedure and the breast skin removed does not make up very much of the total breast volume.

How can I prepare for breast lift surgery?

You will need to stop smoking several weeks prior to surgery, and you might need to adjust some of your current medications based on Dr. Chick’s instructions. Other steps you can take to prepare for surgery include filling your prescriptions, making arrangements for a ride to and from the surgery center and preparing your recovery space.
