Salt Lake City & Moab, UT
Liposuction is the removal of fat from a specific area of the body by inserting small cannulas under the skin and suctioning out fat tissue. It is an extremely useful operation, but it must be stressed that it is NOT a means of weight loss. The best results are seen when overall body weight is within 10 to 20 percent of ideal body weight, and when skin elasticity is good. The skin must be capable of retracting when the fat is removed, otherwise the skin will sag. So generally, younger patients do better than older (over age 50) patients.

Common Treatment Areas
The most popular areas for liposuction are the abdomen, flanks, lateral hips, and inner thighs. Each area is done separately, but may be combined in one operation. In some instances, patients may combine liposuction with other plastic surgery procedures such as tummy tuck or arm lift. Ideal candidates for these types of combination procedures are individuals with fatty deposits and loose, excess skin. The removal of extreme amounts of fat can be dangerous if done as an outpatient procedure. Generally, we do not remove more than 5,000 grams of fat (about 12 pounds) in one session, and we plan our surgery around that limit.
Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia at one of Dr. Chick’s fully accredited surgical facilities. To begin, he will create a series of small incisions in the treatment area. Through these incisions, he will insert the cannulas, moving them back and forth to break up the fat. The fatty tissue will then be suctioned out. The operation time depends on how many areas are being done; generally each area takes about one hour to do. Once Dr. Chick is done making all of the agreed-upon modifications, he will close the incisions using sutures and dress the treatment area with surgical dressings and a girdle-like compression garment.
The Recovery Period
Afterwards, you must wear the compression garment for about one month to minimize swelling and to help the skin re-drape itself. You may shower the day after surgery. Most people are able to return to work in about seven to 10 days. Significant swelling will persist for three to six months. Massage therapy, by an experienced therapist, can significantly improve results of surgery. We recommend starting in the first two to three weeks after surgery.
Dr. Chick will schedule several follow-up appointments during your recovery so he can monitor your healing progress. These appointments are important as they allow Dr. Chick to make recommendations or modifications that will enhance your recovery.
What Are the Potential Complications?
Complications are limited when liposuction is not overdone. There is some swelling and bruising, and the skin over the areas may be numb for several weeks after the procedure. Occasionally, a touch-up procedure may be required. If this touch-up procedure does not require anesthesia, it can be done in our office at no charge. Rarely, the touch-up procedure does require anesthesia and thus a return to the surgical center, in which case some fees may be required.
Can liposuction get rid of loose skin?
Liposuction does not treat excess, loose skin. If, in addition to surplus fat, you struggle with moderate to severe skin laxity, Dr. Chick may recommend combining liposuction with another body contouring procedure such as arm lift, breast lift or tummy tuck. He can determine the best course of treatment for you following an in-person consultation.
Are results permanent?
The results of liposuction are technically permanent. Once fat cells are removed, they cannot return. However, the remaining fat cells in the treatment area can enlarge. In addition, weight gain can occur in untreated body areas. The best way to maintain your slimmer and more attractive physique after liposuction is to maintain a stable weight by practicing good lifestyle habits, including eating healthily and exercising regularly.
Women are encouraged to postpone liposuction until they are done having children and breastfeeding. This is because future pregnancies can cause fat pockets to return to the body, potentially altering the aesthetic effects of liposuction.
Is scarring noticeable?
Every surgical procedure leaves some degree of scarring, and liposuction is no exception. However, the incisions made during the procedure are typically small and Dr. Chick places them in natural folds of skin when possible, so scarring is discreet.
Your post-op recovery also plays an important role in how well your scars heal. As long as you follow all of Dr. Chick’s instructions, your scars should heal properly. You should also avoid smoking and exposing your healing scars to direct sunlight in the months following your surgery.
How much will my liposuction procedure cost?
The final cost of your liposuction procedure will depend on a number of factors, including the number of areas being treated, the specific liposuction technique used and whether other procedures are being incorporated into the operation. Dr. Chick can provide you with a cost estimate of your procedure during your initial consultation.
