Mastopexy / Breast Lift.

Mastopexy, or breast lift, does just that; it elevates the sagging breast and nipple, making it look more youthful.

It is done using a general anaesthetic at one of the fully accredited surgical centers, and takes about 2 ½ hours. It can be done with the addition of a breast implant if more volume is desired. Recovery time depends on patients' normal daily activites, but most women can return to work in 7-10 days, and to full activity in 3-4 weeks.

The major trade off of this procedure is scarring from the incisions required to remove excess skin and thus lift the breast. The length of scars is dependent on the amount of skin that is removed. Smaller scars result when the incisions can be limited to around the areola and a short distance under the breast; larger scars result when the incisions required are much more extensive.

This operation will not effect the ability to breast feed, and usually does not interfere with nipple sensation. Gravity, however, continues to affect the breast after the operation, and some evidence of sagging will eventually be visible again. How long it takes to show again, and how significant it becomes, is dependant on:

1. Current breast skin elasticity
2. Pregnancy
3. Significant weight gain and/or loss
4. Significant sun exposure
5. Quality of your genes

In any event, it is unlikely that the amount of sagging that recurs will be as significant as before surgery.
